I moved to a small town in Texas. I’m not what you would
describe as an “orthodox” Mormon. For
this reason, I wasn’t received well in my new ward. But God opened a window
because the second counselor in the Relief Society president was a feminist. I grew stronger. I grew to be better as a person. I learned
that there are as many ways to be a “Mormon” as there are Mormons.
Then God asked me to give back. I created Rockstarr
Ministries to reach out to women caught in the sex trade. I knew I could reach people still struggling
in the sex trade, and show them how to get out. God provides the right people
at the right time and I was trying to get Rockstarr Ministries off the
ground. Enter Mo-Fem visiting teaching.
My visiting teachers are amazing. From the first week these women jumped right in
there to fight the cause with me. They never left my side. Everything I posted
on Facebook about Rockstarr Ministries, they were right there. Negative or doubtful comments that were
directed at me, they defended my cause. They were my absolute champions.
Taking the side of a former sex worker who starts an
outreach program to other sex workers is one thing, but giving out condoms and
gift bags to street prostitutes is quite another.
One day, I meekly
asked, “Hey, does anybody wanna go pass out condoms with me?"Enter Visiting Teacher one and Visiting Teacher two.
Not only did I get a yes, but I got an amazing "I'll do the city of Portland," and " I'll do Orange County!"
I thought, “Are you kidding?”
They weren't.Not only were these women going to support me through this event, but they stood right next to me in the trenches! Our first outreach event turned out to be a whopping 13 cities nationwide. It was weeks of group discussions, questions, phone calls, and logistics. It was time consuming, but every step of the way, every beat of the drum, my visiting teachers, Sister L and Sister A, have been there.
Because of my visiting teachers, the slippery slope of uncertainty turned into a stepping stone of hope. And if that’s not awesome enough, there have been Christmas cards, the silly Facebook posts (some with cats!) some just words of love and encouragement. With every act of kindness, service and love, I grow.
We all do.
My Visiting Teachers have been a blessing.
Who I am now, is not who I was six years ago; because God
puts the right people, at the right time, in the right place in your life.
I have a testimony of this. I hope that others will step up,
and join us in Mo-Fem visiting teaching.
We all deserve to serve, and to be served.
And maybe, just maybe, like me, your Visiting Teachers will
help you succeed, be happy, and do more
good for the world.
You GO, RockStarr! I think one of the final "frontiers" of the church and of even the most progressive Mormons is breaking the tabboos about talking about the SCARY things like the problems of people INSIDE the Adult Industry. It's easy-peasey to see, and say, P0rn is teh Enemyzzzz, and get all spooky about it; it is quite another to ask a street girl what her name is and if she's hungry. Thank you for being the voice that will break that last barrier down and put a human person instead of a "problem of evil evilness" in place for Mormons to start thinking about these issues in more complex ways. Love you six ways to Sunday, Girl!
ReplyDeleteThis story is incredible! Thank you for sharing and thanks for all the incredible work you are doing giving back through RockStarr Ministries! This is why I love MoFem Visiting Teaching too- because it consists of people who understand mormonism, but who also aren't afraid to step out of the rigid box of orthodoxy and be there for each other in all of our unorthodox ways.
ReplyDeleteI used to call visiting teachers "assigned friends" in a pejorative way. Now, I LOVE having them! (If they are worth their salt) Someone that is looking out for you, praying for you, serving and checking in on you can never go long without becoming a true lifelong friend. I know how parched the waters of Mormonism have been for you, trying to find a kindred spirit through all the orthodox conservatism. I'm glad you found some. I'm equally glad that you are changing the face of mormonism. It is the nature of the gospel to be open and inviting to all. It is the nature of humankind to be fearful and mistrust what we don't understand. It takes a while to learn the diff. That those who turn their noses up at us are fighting the natural man just as much as we fight addiction. I love this sis.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautiful example of the pure love of Christ in action. Thank you so much for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteI once worked with a teenage girl whose mother regularly sent her to work in the local sex trade. Such an eye opening experience. Thank you for sharing a bit of your journey out of that life. Between your courage and having the best helpers, you are continuing that journey through your ministries. Bless you!
ReplyDeleteSister Rockstarr, thank you for this post! Thank you for sharing the "pure love of Christ" in such a significant way.
ReplyDeleteI have known this lady for quite some time. This was beautiful, I cried. Congratulations are in order!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, my dear friend.
DeleteSister Rockstarr. How cool is that?
ReplyDeleteThe coolest. :)
DeleteSweet woman. Your journey is what the gospel is here for. Not to confoem in a coomie cutter, lemming sort of wat, but so that each of us can find God in our own way and tien around and bring love and healing to others in a way that they can receive it. You are an angel and me heroine and so are the women who had the courage to help you on YOUR path. .. love you!
ReplyDeleteAwesome--I am so thrilled that Heavenly Father has put these wonderful women into your life. I am glad that I could be there for a small part of your journey and am proud of what I see you doing to help others in such courageous ways.
